Summer Ready: Be Ready for Extreme Weather Events

December 1, 2025

Australian summers are famous for long days, beach holidays and backyard barbecues, but they’re also increasingly defined by extreme weather. From heatwaves that stretch for days, to sudden flash flooding, severe storms, bushfires and cyclones, summer can test both our resilience and our readiness.

As climate patterns shift, extreme weather events are becoming more intense and less predictable. Heatwaves can place serious strain on older Australians and those with underlying health conditions. Severe storms can knock out power and damage homes in minutes. Bushfires and cyclones can escalate quickly, leaving little time to react. The good news? Planning ahead is one of the most effective ways to protect lives, homes and peace of mind.

Preparation doesn’t need to be dramatic or expensive. It starts with awareness, and knowing the risks common to your area and staying informed through weather alerts and local emergency advice. Simple steps like clearing gutters, securing loose outdoor items, trimming overhanging branches and checking smoke alarms can significantly reduce damage when extreme weather hits.

From an insurance perspective, preparation is just as important. Understanding what your home and contents policy covers (and what it doesn’t) before an event occurs can prevent stress and surprises later. Keeping an up-to-date home inventory, backing up important documents and photos, and knowing how to lodge a claim quickly can make recovery far smoother.

Finally, have a plan. Know where you’ll go if you need to leave, how you’ll stay cool during extreme heat, and how you’ll communicate with family if power or mobile networks go down. A simple emergency kit (water, medications, torch, batteries and important contacts) can make all the difference if you have to leave your home in a hurry.

Your Summer Readiness Checklist:

Check local weather alerts and emergency warnings

Clear gutters, drains and yard debris

Secure loose outdoor furniture and items

Trim overhanging branches near buildings

Test smoke alarms and replace batteries

Review home and contents insurance cover

Photograph valuables and important assets

Prepare a basic emergency kit

Plan where to go if you need to leave

Share your plan with family or neighbours

A prepared household isn’t a fearful one, it’s a confident one. With a little planning now, Australians can enjoy summer as it should be: memorable, manageable, and safe.
