National Carers Week – Caring for those who care for us

October 12, 2026

Behind many healthcare appointments, prepared meals and calming conversations is someone quietly helping another person through the day.

National Carers Week, from 11 to 17 October 2026, recognises Australia’s unpaid carers. This year’s theme, “Care for a carer: Making carers visible”, invites us to notice their contribution and offer meaningful support.

Care takes many forms

A carer might be a young adult supporting a parent, a partner helping someone through cancer treatment, or a grandparent caring for a family member with disability. Others support someone living with a mental health condition, chronic illness or the challenges of ageing.

Many simply say, “I’m looking after someone I love.” They do not always recognise themselves as carers.

Their days can involve organising appointments, helping with personal care, preparing food and managing unfamiliar services. Just as important are the conversations, encouragement, and companionship that help someone feel heard and valued.

Gratitude needs action

Carers help people preserve dignity, independence and connection. Their devotion strengthens families and makes our communities more compassionate places to live.

However, caring also takes time and energy. Work, study, friendships and personal health can become difficult to manage alongside another person’s needs.

Saying thank you matters. Following it with practical help matters too. Offer to prepare dinner, collect groceries or help with an everyday task. Ask what would make the week easier, then follow through. Keep inviting carers to social occasions, even when they cannot always attend.

Keep healthcare close

Keeping healthcare local is an important part of supporting carers and the people beside them. Long journeys and appointments across several locations add pressure to already demanding days.

Local GPs, pharmacies, allied health professionals and community services help families access support closer to home. Health and community hubs bring services together, making visits more manageable and helping people stay connected to familiar surroundings.

Carers deserve support for their own wellbeing, including time to rest and attend their own appointments.

To every carer: your care matters, and so do you.
